CAREGIVER CERTIFICATION COURSE – 62 TOTAL CREDIT HOURS


SUPERVISORY CARE – 20 TOTAL CREDIT HOURS


COURSE DESCRIPTION: During this course students will learn the philosophies, concepts, and fundamentals behind basic Supervisory Care as outlined by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Students will explore concepts/topics that include: resident rights, resident dignity, independence, self-determination, privacy, and choice. Upon the completion of this course students will have learned the techniques used in effectively communicating with the geriatric population, including: how to effectively manage personal stress, how to identify and prevent geriatric abuse/neglect/exploitation, how to appropriately communicate with the geriatric population or staff and superiors at the facility using written documentation/reporting techniques, and how to develop a thorough service plan. Finally, students will be exposed to fundamental concepts behind geriatric nutrition, pharmacology, social/recreational/rehabilitative activities, advanced directives, and fire safety/emergency procedures.


COURSE PRE-REQUISITES: None


TEXTBOOK/COURSE MATERIALS: The course is taught using the Assisted Living Tutorials Supervisory Care Manual. All handouts are provided by the instructor.


EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES UPON COMPLETION: Upon completion of this course, students will possess the certification necessary to work in a Supervisory Care Licensed Assisted Living Institution.

 

PERSONAL CARE – 30 TOTAL CREDIT HOURS


COURSE DESCRIPTION: During this course students will receive a refresher on the topics covered under the Supervisory Care Course. This course will provide students with a well balanced understanding of all activities of daily living, as well as a working knowledge of how to assist with the self administration of a variety of medications. Students will learn how to successfully obtain and record vital signs, appropriately work following all universal precautions for infection control, how to appropriately recognize multiple psychiatric physiological, and emotional conditions (e.g. cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, depression, etc.).


COURSE PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of Supervisory Care Course

DIRECTED CARE – 12 TOTAL CREDIT HOURS


COURSE DESCRIPTION: During this course students will be refreshed on all of the topics covered under the Supervisory Care Course as well as the Personal Care Course. After completion of the course, students will successfully be able to identify the difference between types of dementia that exist in the geriatric population. Students will learn how to effectively communicate, redirect, and assist with activities of daily living in a population that is plagued with dementia. Students will also be able to identify signs and symptoms of dementia, relative to behaviors, such as wandering, repetitive behaviors, emotional disturbances, hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and sexually appropriate/inappropriate behavior. Finally, students will be exposed to concepts surrounding environmental changes, staff/family relationships, activities of daily living in residents with dementia, and end of life care.


COURSE PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of Supervisory Care Course and Personal Care Course
